From Middle English tobursten, tobresten, from Old English tōberstan (“to burst asunder, shatter”), from Proto-Germanic *tebrestaną (“to burst asunder”), equivalent to to- (“apart”) + burst. Cognate with Old Saxon tebrestan, German zerbersten.
