Originates from eastern dialects; probably as a loan from Karelian toko, from dialectal Russian токо́ (tokó); alternatively from toki + -ko.
tokko
tokko (archaic)
In current language, the clitic -ko, -kö is normally used instead of tokko. The example above would then read:
tokka + -o, a shortening from the earlier tokanpoika (in which tokka is found with the genitive form tokan + poika (“son, boy”)). tokanpoika is attested since 1870, while tokko is found later, from the 1950s onward.
The etymology of the initial word is unknown. One possibility is that it is tokka (“tidal port”); gobies (at least the species encountered in Finland) are found in shallow coastal waters, such as tide pools.
