From Latin trīcennium (“30-year period”) + -al, from trīcennis (“30-year”) + -ium, from trīciēs (“30 times”) + annus (“year”) + -is. Compare Latin tricennalis. Equivalent to tri- + decennial. Doublet of tricennal.
