Pela

Etymology

Possibly a derived verb from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *dwa(ː)ŋ (hole, orifice, cave, pit, well). Cognate with Burmese ထွင်း (htwang:, carve, sculpture), Tibetan དོང (dong, deep hole, pit), Old Chinese (OC *doːŋ, *doːŋs, “hole”), Nuosu (tur, drill, chop up). Compare with Lhao Vo tung". The semantic innovation in Pela from "*drill" (cf. Zaiwa tong (drill)) to "write" itself is only shared with Lhao Vo. However, similar derivations are also present in various Tibeto-Burman languages.
