From Proto-Hmong-Mien *tshuŋX (“bone”). Peiros suggests a relation with Proto-Mon-Khmer *cʔaaŋ ~ *cʔaiŋ (“bone”), whence Vietnamese xương (“bone, skeleton”); however, there are phonetic issues due to the presence of labial initials in Mienic forms.[1]
