From Proto-Ugric *tüγɜtɜ or *tüwɜtɜ (“fire”). Compare Western Mansi тавт (tavt), Northern Khanty тўт (tŭt), Eastern Khanty тӱӽәт (tüḥət).^[1][2] Replaces Proto-Uralic *tule.

From obsolete tövik (“to stitch”), related to tövis (“thorn”), with -z (frequentative suffix), compare néz, nyúz. Cognate of tű (“needle, pin”). For the relation between root and derivative, compare fő (“to be cooked”) and főz (“to cook”, transitive).^[3]
