From Austronesian. Compare Malay ribu (thousand), Eastern Cham ribau, rabau (thousand). Also borrowed from the same source are Bahnar rơbâu (thousand), Koho röböu (hundred thousand).

The meaning in Dictionarium Anamitico-Latinum (1838) is defined as "one million", but in Như Tây nhựt trình (1889), it clearly means "one hundred thousand".
