Etymology 1
From Austronesian. Compare Malay ribu (“thousand”), Eastern Cham ribau, rabau (“thousand”). Also borrowed from the same source are Bahnar rơbâu (“thousand”), Koho röböu (“hundred thousand”).
The meaning in Dictionarium Anamitico-Latinum (1838) is defined as "one million", but in Như Tây nhựt trình (1889), it clearly means "one hundred thousand".
This word seems to be a South Central-Southern item, while the Northern dialects chiefly used ức (億).
