From Proto-Finnic *valta, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *waldą (“might, power, authority”) or Proto-Norse (*walda-) (compare Swedish våld, German Gewalt, Dutch geweld, Icelandic vald).[1] Attested since Mikael Agricola: Se Wsi Testamenti (The New Testament, 1548), as walda.
