Derived from Old High German wangkussīn, which is a compound of wanga (“cheek”) (cf. German Wange) and kussīn (“cushion”) (cf. German Kissen). The second part comes from Old French coissin (“cushion”) (cf. French coussin), from Medieval Latin coxinus (“cushion”), from Latin coxa (“hip”).[1]
