Cognate to Sanskrit वास (vāsá-, sojourn, stay, spending the night), प्रौष्ठ (próṣṭha-, lodging).[1] Alternatively from an unattested *vartë, from Proto-Albanian *wartā, close to Tocharian B wärto (garten), Irish fert (grave mound), Old English weorð (yard).[2] According to Krzysztof Tomasz Witczak, it might be the source of Doric Greek ἀάνθα (aántha)[3]
