Possibly borrowed from Vulgar Latin vittula, diminutive of Latin vitta (“band, headband”),[1] although very uncertain since the word is not attested anywhere in old manuscripts or in the Romance languages. Çabej considers it an inherited word; compare Proto-Balto-Slavic *wṓˀka (“eyelid”).[2]
