From an earlier verb *vingt (“to bend”) (the r follows the pattern of stingt “to harden, to stiffen,” stingrs “firm, strong, strict”), from Proto-Baltic *wing-, from Proto-Indo-European *wen- (“to bend, to incline”) with an extra g. Cognates include Lithuanian vingrùs (“tortuous, sinuous; agile, able, skillful”), Old Prussian wingriskan (“cunning, deceit(ful)”) (accusative).
