Etymology

Of uncertain origin. Has been linked to Latin vagus (wandering, vague);[1] wandering vagrants were perhaps considered to be more likely to steal,[2] or perhaps the act of stealing could be viewed as a "wandering off" of goods.

The present-tense forms are from the o-grade stem vag-, while the non-present-tense forms are from the lengthened o-grade stem *wāg-.[1]
