From earlier wijen, from Middle Dutch wiën, from Old Dutch wīen, from Proto-West Germanic *wīhijan, from Proto-Germanic *wīhijaną. The -d- was inserted in the early modern period due to hypercorrection, the earlier and original form wijen being mistakenly identified as the result of deletion of intervocalic -d- (a very common development visible in e.g. weder/weer, rode/rooie, moeder/moer, and so forth).
