Uncertain. Perhaps inherited from Proto-Slavic *jьrъ, *jьrьjь (“Aryan realm”), a borrowing from Iranian. Cognate with Belarusian вы́рай (výraj), Czech irij, Russian вы́рей, ирей, ирий (výrej, irej, irij), Serbo-Croatian ириј, and Ukrainian ви́рiй, ірій (výrij, irij). A derivation from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jū- (“body of water”) has also been proposed.
