Cognate with Belarusian вы́рай (výraj), Czech irij, Russian вы́рей, ирей, ирий (výrej, irej, irij), Serbo-Croatian ириј, and Ukrainian ви́рiй, ірій (výrij, irij). A derivation from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jū- (body of water) has also been proposed.
