Vietnamese
Pronunciation
Etymology 1
Noun
ánh
- a branch of some tubers
Etymology 2
Sino-Vietnamese word from 映.[1]
Although generally considered a Sino-Vietnamese borrowing from Chinese 映 (yìng), some comparative linguists have explored the possibility of a connection to Proto-Austroasiatic roots such as *cʔaiŋ ‘to shine’ or *cʔaŋ ‘to expose to heat’, due to semantic similarity. Sidwell (p.c.) has suggested that if such a relationship holds, it would strengthen the case for *cʔaiŋ as a valid Proto-AA root. However, this connection remains uncertain, and the Vietnamese form *ánh* is still most plausibly a Chinese loan.
