From Proto-Indo-European *ḱlep- (“wet, damp”).[1] Cognate with Latvian slapjš (“wet”);[2][3] further relatives outside Baltic include Polish słota (“rainy weather”), Ancient Greek κλέπας (klépas, “something moist”), Irish cluain (“meadow”).[4]
