From Му́рман (Múrman, Murman Coast), itself a clipping of Му́рманский бе́рег (Múrmanskij béreg), from Middle Russian му́рмане (múrmane, Norwegians) attested from the 14th century, probably a borrowing from Old Norse norðmaðr (Norseman).

Renamed from Рома́нов-на-Му́рмане (Románov-na-Múrmane) in 1917.
