Etymology
From Proto-Mordvinic *kərga, whence also Moksha крга (krga). Likely borrowed from Proto-Slavic *kъrkъ (“neck”) or a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃- (“to swallow, devour”). A direct connection to Proto-Finnic *kurkku has also been proposed, but considered doubtful.
