Alternatively, derivation from Ancient Greek γέφυρα (géphura, “dam, bridge”) has been suggested.
Cognate with Kazakh көпір (köpır), Karakalpak көпир (köpir), Karachay-Balkar кёпюр (köpür), and Chuvash кӗпер (kĕp̬er, “bridge”).
