From Proto-Mordvinic and perhaps Proto-Finno-Volgaic *mala (edge, brim (of an opening, gap, cleft)) + *-sV (inessive case suffix), possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *malā (whence Latvian mala (edge; cost, surrounding), Lithuanian malá (land, landscape; edge)).[1] May be related to Finnish malo (edge, side; chink, hole).
