From Middle Mongol ᠰᠣᠭᠣᠩᠭᠢᠨ ᠠ (soɣonggin-a). A loanword from Proto-Turkic *sogan (onion) augmented with a suffix resembling Middle Mongol ᠭᠠᠨᠠ (-ɣana), ᠭᠡᠨᠡ (-gene) used in names of plants.[1][2]
