Сәүкә

Etymology

Cognate with Tatar чәүкә (çäwkä, jackdaw), Karachay-Balkar чаука (çauka, jackdaw), Crimean Tatar çavke (jackdaw).

Apparently related to Hungarian csóka (jackdaw), Chechen човка (čovka, jackdaw).

Note the reconstructed Proto-Slavic *čavъka (jackdaw). However, Russian does not have (and does not exhibit any traces of) this term, so the above terms could not be borrowed from Russian. More research is needed.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key):
  • Hyphenation: сәү‧кә

Noun

  1. jackdaw
