Usage notes

  • Тысяча in all cases governs the genitive plural of the noun, except for instrumental case. In instrumental case, тысяча can potentially function either as a numeral (with the form тысячью, in which case the noun must also be in instrumental case) or as a noun (with the form тысячей, in which case the following noun is in genitive plural). However, not all Russians recognize this distinction and may use both indiscriminately.
