From *Qïtay (China), transferred/reinterpreted from Old Turkic (Qïtaǰ, Khitan);[1] ultimately from Khitan self-denomination Khitan 𘱿𘱤 (*qid i) or 𘱿𘲫 (*qid ún). Compare Middle Chinese 契丹 (kʰɨt̚ tɑn, Khitan).
