Etymology
From Arabic عُصْفُر (ʕuṣfur). The forms with an մ- (m-) are from the related مُعَصْفَر (muʕaṣfar, “safflower”).
Ačaṙyan records the given names Մասպուռ (Maspuṙ) and Մասփուր (Maspʻur) as alternative forms of Մասուր (Masur, literally “rosehip”), but they are rather derived from this safflower word.
