From Middle Armenianգերմաստի(germasti). Some of the dialectal forms are folk-etymologically reshaped as գել(gel, “wolf”) + մասրի(masri, “rose shrub”) or կարմիր(karmir, “red”) + մասրի(masri). The Meghri form is probably borrowed from the Turkic cognate.
