Late borrowing from Ancient Greek γύψος (gúpsos), likely via an Aramaic form exposing an arbitrary extension of Late Koine Greek style or origin as reflected in Classical Syriac ܓܘܦܣܝܢ (gupsīn), ܓܝܦܣܝܢ (gipsīn) and Jewish Palestinian Aramaic גבסין, גפסין. It is unknown whether the Greek term is ultimately related to جِصّ (jiṣṣ).

جبس • (gabs or jabs) m
Likely borrowed from Iranian, compare especially Northern Kurdish zebeş and jebeş as well as Zazaki debes. Ultimately from Middle Persian (hlbyck' /xarbīzag/, “watermelon”); a doublet of خِرْبِز (ḵirbiz, “melon”).
جبس • (jabas) m (collective, singulative جبسة f (jabase))
