A corruption of its epithet إِسْكَنْدَرَانِيَّة (ʔiskandarāniyya, literally Alexandrian) in the Ancient Greek name of one species δάφνη Ἀλεξάνδρεια (dáphnē Alexándreia), possibly blended with a form of Persian اسپرغم (esparğam, medicinal herb), as in Persian Ruscus genus and species are now most commonly called مورد اسفرم (murd esfaram, literally myrtle-herb).
