A corruption of its epithet إِسْكَنْدَرَانِيَّة (ʔiskandarāniyya, literally “Alexandrian”) in the Ancient Greek name of one species δάφνη Ἀλεξάνδρεια (dáphnē Alexándreia), possibly blended with a form of Persian اسپرغم (esparğam, “medicinal herb”), as in Persian Ruscus genus and species are now most commonly called مورد اسفرم (murd esfaram, literally “myrtle-herb”).
