Arabic

Etymology

Looks like an Aramaic cognate of ظَيَّان (ẓayyān), however also like exposing an Ancient Greek ending: probably a loan from Aramaic, in view of the attestation of Classical Syriac ܕܝܢܘܣ (dynws, celandine), a distortion of Ancient Greek χελιδόνιον (khelidónion). Compare the botanically close Arabic طُبَّاق (ṭubbāq, Dittrichia viscosa) having a similar correspondence /tˀ/ to d /d/.
