      أجهدنا أنفسنا أسبوعين في تنفيذ ما اتفقنا عليه ومراقبة ما تم من إصلاح ونظافة. وفي الليالي العديدة السابقة لحضورهما، كنا نجلس في دوار العمودية، نتحدث عمّا انتهينا منه، وعمّا يجب علينا القيام به. ولم تخلُ أحاديثنا من حكايات مختلفة عن بلاد سيمون الفرنساويّة. وكان بعض الحضور من متعلمي الدراويش، فتذكروا لنا الحرب القديمة التي كانت بيننا وبين الفرنسيين، منذ حوالي مائة وخمسين سنة. وبين ما تذكرناه، وهذا ما أكّده عليّ جدّي وحدثتني عنه جدّتي، رحمة الله عليهما، أن الفرنسيس قد أقاموا في الدراويش سنين، وعاشروا نساءنا، والعياذ بالله، في غير الحلال. وبعضهم قد أقام في بلادنا، وأسلم، وتزوّج من نسائنا، ومارس التجارة أو فِلاحة الأرض. واكتشفنا، نقلا عن المُسِنِّين، أهل الخير والبركة، نقلا عن الأجداد الراحلين، أن قريتنا مات فيها من أبناء الدراويش والبُلدان المجاورة، وبيد قوم سيمون، سبعة عشر ألفًا. حَزِنَّا لذلك أشد الحزن، وغضبنا له أشد الغضب، ولكننا قررنا، والفضل في ذلك راجع لإمام المسجد، أن ذلك شيء قد مات، وأن الثأر من قوم سيمون يسقط بمرور سبعة أجيال. واكتشفنا أيضًا، ونحن نضحك، السر في هذا البياض الشاهق في وجوه بناتنا ونسائنا، والسر في كثرة العيون الملوَّنة بين اولادنا في الدراويش، وفي النواحي المحيطة بنا، من فراسكور إلى عزبة البرج، ومن بورسعيد إلى الإسكندرية.
      The Commissioner of the village spoke to me and stressed the urgency of having al-Darāwīš look personable when receiving Ḥāmid, especially in front of his French wife, in order to make him proud and do credit to him before his French wife and, most importantly, in order to do credit to us and to the whole area and to all of Egypt before all Europeans, who are collectively represented in the person of Lady Simone. I thus bade the Commissioner farewell and assured him that I shall devote to this matter all my attention and care, and I declared that I shall call up the elders of al-Darāwīš and the rest of the village in a state of emergency on the occasion of the return of Ḥāmid Muṣṭafā al-Beḥēri, who had been blessed by Allah in the land of the Franks, and his wife, Lady Simone, who was coming with him from the lands of the Gauls, and the Franks, and the outlanders.

      We exerted ourselves for two weeks to carry out what we had agreed upon and to oversee the cleaning and the reconstruction. In the many nights before their arrival, we would sit in my quarters and discuss what we had completed. Our talk, however, was not devoid of tales about the lands of the French lady. In our exchanges, some of the attendants were among the educated members of al-Darāwīš, and they called up the Old War, which raged between us and the French about 150 years ago. And from the venerable elderly of our village, who passed on to us reports from the bygone generations, we learned that, from our village and the adjoining ones, 17 thousand people were put to death by the hands of Simone's people. Upon learning this, we were deeply grieved and intensely enraged, but, thanks to the Imam of our mosque, we determined that this was something of the past and were told that rightful retaliatory killing is voided after seven successive generations. And, while giggling, we also worked out the secret behind the rich and lively whiteness with which the skin of our daughters and wives are infused and the many-colored eyes of our children, from Faraskur to ʿEzbat el-Borj in Damietta and from Port Said to Alexandria.
