Further etymology is unknown, perhaps a borrowing from Old Chinese (OC *kjeʔ); cognate with Azerbaijani kağız, Bashkir ҡағыҙ (qağıź), Kazakh қағаз (qağaz), Kyrgyz кагаз (kagaz), Tatar кәгазь (käğaz’), Turkmen kagyz, Uyghur قەغەز (qeghez) and Uzbek qog'oz.
