Etymology

Seemingly borrowed from Aramaic אַפְקוּתָא (ʾap̄qūṯā, the portion of the back of neck which joins the vertebra, Genick, nucha, scruff; also upper part of a date palm), reanalyzed from אַפְרָקוּתָא (ʾap̄rāqūṯā), פְּרִיקְתָּא (pərīqtā), פִּירְקְתָא (pīrəqṯā), פּוּרְקְתָא (pūrəqṯā), ܦܴܪܱܩܬ݂ܳܐ (pāraqṯā) – obviously a much used word – after the root פ־ק־ע cognate to the Arabic root ف ق ع (f-q-ʕ) related to bursting in place of the root פ־ר־ק cognate to Arabic ف ر ق (f-r-q) related to reaving, so the Arabic etymological parallel would be فَقَار (faqār, vertebral column) from the related ف ق ر (f-q-r), the borrowing source being a regiolect and chronolect where the distinction of /ʔ/, /ʕ/, /ħ/ and /j/ was already degenerated – as the source of Old Armenian յիմար (yimar) –, resolving the gap after the stem with /x/ as nearest consonant to /uː/ to obtain a triconsonantal term again.
