Shortening of Aramaic שומשומא (šumššumā), from Akkadian 𒊭𒈦𒌑𒈬 (šamaššammū, “oil plant”), compound of 𒉌𒄑 (šaman, “oil”) and 𒌑 (šammum, “plant”), and therefore related to the root ܫ ܡ ܢ (š m n) and ܣܲܡܵܐ (sammā). Compare Arabic سِمْسِم (simsim) and Hebrew שֻׁמְשֹׁם (šumšōm).
