Lubotsky considers the initial ś- in श्चन्द्र (ścandrá) to be a secondary accretion rather than indicating the original form of the word. Both श्चन्द्र (ścandrá) and छन्द् (chand, “to shine”) are, according to Lubotsky, from the same Indo-European root and reflect forms with the s-mobile, while this term reflects no s-mobile. Cognate with Ancient Greek κάνδαρος (kándaros, “charcoal”), Latin candeō, Old Armenian խանդ (xand). See also the root चन्द् (cand, “to shine, be bright, gladden”).
