Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰadrás (auspicious, fortunate, happy), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰn̥d-ró-s, from the root *bʰend- (to be happy, glad).[1][2] Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬠𐬀𐬜𐬭𐬀 (hubaδra, fortunate). Alternatively, Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰadrás has been connected to Proto-Germanic *batizô (better), from a Proto-Indo-European root *bʰed-.[3]
