From Proto-Dravidian *on-paHtu (“nine”), a compound of *on- (“one”) + *paHtu (“ten”), literally “one less than ten”. Cognate with Malayalam ഒമ്പത് (ompatŭ), Kannada ಒಂಬತ್ತು (ombattu). Replaced the old Tamil word 𑀢𑁴𑀡𑁆𑀝𑀼 (toṇṭu).
