Borrowed from Austroasiatic (Luce 1985); compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *ml(əw) (“betel”), whence Mon ဇဗၠူ (həpluˀ, “betel”). Cognate with Bwe Karen θə́ɓu, Eastern Pwo ဖူႋလး (phɯ̄ lá), Pa'o Karen ပြူး. Shorto (2006, #1860) notes that this word is widespread in Southeast Asia. See, for example, Thai พลู (pluu).
