Mingrelian
Etymology
Has been compared to Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐌻𐌱𐍉 (kalbō), from Proto-Germanic *kalbaz, itself of uncertain origins.
Since the presence of Germanic speakers so far east should be met with hesitation, one may rather consider a relation with Akkadian 𒆏𒋢 (kabsu, “young male sheep”), Classical Syriac ܟܒܫܐ (keḇšā, “wether”).
These terms represent inter-Semitic and ultimately foreign borrowings: the final consonant of Hebrew כֶּבֶשׂ (kéḇeś, “sheep”), Phoenician 𐤊𐤁𐤔 (kbš, “sheep”) and Arabic كَبْش (kabš, “ram, bellwether”) shows irregular correspondence. This final consonant may be reconstructed as Proto-West Semitic *ś (/ɬ/), the historic pronunciation of which was /ɬ/. In the Mingrelian word, Mingrelian ლ (l) may go back to Proto-Kartvelian *lʿ, whose pronunciation was identical to this Proto-West Semitic consonant - contrast Svan შ (š), also going back to Proto-Kartvelian *lʿ.
