Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁onḱos ( “ burden ” ) , from *h₁neḱ- ( “ to take away ” ) . It has also been claimed that all attestations can be understood from a meaning "swelling", from earlier "curvature", and thus ultimately identical to 'Etymology 2'.
