Etymology

From earlier makokoro, from 真(ま) (ma, “true”) + 心(こころ) (kokoro, “heart”). The kokoro changes to gokoro as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First attested in Ochikubo Monogatari, written some time in the late 10th century.
