Coined in 1944 by the Saidan Hōjin Kōbukan (later renamed Aikikai Foundation), shortened from older (あい)()()(どう) (aiki budō, literally spirit-meeting martial arts).[1] Compare synonymous (あい)()(じゅつ) (aikijutsu, literally spirit-meeting technique).
