Etymology
鹽 (en, “salt”) + 素 (so, “chemical element”). Calque of Dutch zoutstof, from the fact that it is a main ingredient of table salt. Coined by Japanese scientist Udagawa Yōan in 1834 in his book 遠西医方名物考補遺 (“鹽素”). 塩 was simplified from 鹽 in the 1946 Tōyō kanji list.
