Invented for Japanese mahjong by Rin Mokō 林茂光 from such a call from some regions of China, after he found that the usual call in Mandarin () was problematic for Japanese speakers. He adopted the character as ateji, but later discovered that the original character for this sound was (lǒng). Nevertheless, the character remained and was accepted as standard.
