Etymology

From Old Japanese, a compound of (mi, water) +‎ (na, alternative form of possessive particle (no)) +‎ (tsuki, month).[1][2] The tsuki changes to zuki as an instance of rendaku (連濁). Originally referred to the month in which rice paddies need more irrigation;[1][2] the use of the kanji (not; none; without) to spell the na portion is in reference to this need for more water. However, the na was initially the alternative form of possessive / genitive particle (no), and the kanji is thus an example of phonetic ateji (当て字).[1][2]
