Etymology 2
"Bad" > "obscene; ferocious; rascal". Its use is most prominent in dialects of Hubei and Hunan, and possibly originates from the ancient dialectal pronunciation of 匪 (“bad, evil, bandit”), same as Min Nan 歹 (phái(ⁿ), “bad”).
It may be the origin of some uses of 皮 (pí), for example 調皮 (“naughty”), 賴皮 (“shameless”) and 頑皮 (“naughty”).
The Cantonese pronunciation is probably due to confusion with 踎 (mau1, “to squat”), as this word is not native to Cantonese.
Pronunciation
Note:
- pī - "rascal";
- pāi (歹) - "low, mean, shabby, seedy, obscene, shameful".
