Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *bɯːd) : semantic ⺼ (“flesh”) + phonetic 孛 (OC *bɯːds, *bɯːd).
Etymology 1
Attested since the Yuan dynasty. Zhengzhang (2002) proposes that it comes from 襮 (OC *poːwɢ, “embroidered collar”). Sheng (2010) points out that it is unlikely because of the rare literary usage of 襮 in the literature compared to the explosive vernacular usage of 脖 since the Yuan dynasty; he instead proposes that it may be from Proto-Turkic *bōń (“neck”), but also see Wang (2016) and Sun and Du (2022) for some difficulties with the Turkic hypothesis.
