Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *luʔ): semantic 言 (“word, language”) + phonetic 秀 (OC *slus).
Etymology
Possibly Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b-s-lu (STEDT) and cognate to Tibetan སླུས (slus, “to entice; to impose on; to deceive”). The character 䛻 (yòu) would have been phonetically closer to 盾 (OC *l'uːnʔ, *ɦljunʔ) ~ /*slun/ at an early stage, which might have been an internal cognate, but it was normalized as an alternative form of 誘 / 诱 (yòu) by later lexicographers. Also related to 訹 (OC *slud). (Wang, 2012)
