Glyph origin

Originally . Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *mpeːn) : phonetic (OC *men) + semantic (walking;movement). The semantic component (now ) was added during bronze inscriptions.

Etymology 1

Perhaps cognate with (OC *pʰen, *pʰens, “side; oblique”), (OC *pʰeːns, “partial; one-sided”), (OC *ben, *brenʔ, *benʔ, “glib-tongued; insincere”) (Schuessler, 2007).

Based on Old Vietnamese data, Gong (2019) proposes the additional preinitial *tə- to the Baxter-Sagart reconstruction.

“to have hot pot”
From 邊爐边炉 (“hot pot”). Compare (“to drink beer”), from 啤酒 (“beer”).
