Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *zleŋʔ): semantic 青 + phonetic 爭 (OC *ʔsreːŋ).
Perhaps from Mon-Khmer; compare Old Khmer siṅ (“to stay in/at; to abide; to be still”) (Schuessler, 2007). 靖 (OC *zleŋʔ) is the same word (ibid.).
靜
In the Shuōwén Jiězì: "静 means to examine carefully. It is composed of '青' for its meaning and '争' for its sound." The Shuōwén Jiězì identifies "静" as a phono-semantic compound, where "青" acts as the semantic component and "争" as the phonetic component. "青" suggests brightness or clarity. Xu Kai commented: "丹青明审也" ("Vivid colors convey clarity"), indicating that "静" implies clarity or transparency. Duan Yucai believed the original character for "quiet" (静) was "竫." In the Shuowen: "竫 means tranquility and stability." Duan noted: "亭 (pavilion) is a place where people find stability; hence, tranquility is referred to as '亭安.' Any character related to quietness should be written as '竫,' while '静' was a borrowed form."
In the Shuōwén Jiězì Zhù (Commentary on the Shuōwén Jiězì) Distributing five colors with appropriate density and order, even in extreme splendor, avoids muddiness and dullness, which is called "静." Similarly, when the human mind carefully considers and acts appropriately, seeking the inherent principles in every word and deed, even in extreme busyness, there is no chaos, which is also called "静", referencing the "画缋之事" (huà huì zhī shì, matters of painting and embroidery) in the Kaogong Ji (考工记, The Artificers' Record)
